Photo Competition | Sydney Dog Photographer

Just before Christmas I was contacted by Woollahra Municipal Council and asked to judge their Puppies in the Park photo competition. I was really flattered and of course I agreed to it. Ruthless Photos and Ruthless Leather are also donating prizes, so if you live in the area you should get your camera out and start snapping!

The Wentworth Courier are sponsoring the event, so they interviewed me last week. They asked for some photos to run with the article including a self-portrait of me with the dogs. I absolutely loathe being in front of the camera, so combine that with a really hot day and three dogs that don’t want to cooperate and you’ve got a recipe for disaster! Eventually I decided to make life easy for myself and just work with my #1 model, Chopper. As you can see, he wasn’t exactly over the moon about being the chosen one.

If you think there’s a glitch on my blog because the image is appearing twice, there’s not! I’ve just used this pic as my new header.

These are the other four pics I submitted.

Winners of the photo competition will be announced at the Puppies in the Park event on Sunday 27 February from 8am-11am in Christison Park, Vaucluse. [Facebook event invite is here.] We’ll be there with both our stands so come and say hi!

Ruthless Leather Update #12

Here’s a quick update for anyone that might have missed all these tidbits on our Facebook page.

Every time Dave makes a design in a different colour combination I photograph it for the gallery on our website. [Which I updated recently, so if you sent us a photo of your dog it's probably there now!] Here are some recent favourites:

If the customer lives nearby I’ll sometimes deliver the order in person just so I can take a photo of the dog in their new bling! Here’s Flynn the Kelpie in his regular brown and antique brass Lone Ranger. Lots more photos of Flynn can be seen here!

Zeus the Amstaff in his wide brown and brass Rocknrolla with a nameplate. [Collar pictured above, top left.]

Charlie the Amstaff in the prize he won at the Sydney University Pet Fair. A wide brown, brass and amber Nightowl. Don’t we have the best looking clients?!

Some dates for your diary:
Ruthless Photos and Ruthless Leather are going to be at Mosman Pet’s Day Out on Sunday 24 October. If you’re on Facebook you can RSVP to the event here. We’ll also be at the Dogs NSW Spring Fair in Erskine Park on Saturday 20 November. You can RSVP to that here.

Please also note that the cut-off point for Ruthless Leather Christmas present orders is Friday 12 November. We’ll continue to take orders after those dates but Christmas delivery won’t be guaranteed. Remember that we also sell gift vouchers. They’re delivered by email, so they can be purchased at any time.

Ruth[less] - Thanks Kristin!

Kristin - These collars are so gorgeous!

Sydney University Pet Fair 2010

On Saturday we took our Ruthless Leather stand to the University of Sydney’s Pet Fair. We were decked out in our new shirts – which took almost an entire day to source and get printed and cost more than one of our collars – and I brought my camera and treat bag as well, just in case! Lots of people turned out and some even came especially to see us. It was a beautiful sunny day and even though it made for difficult shooting conditions I managed to get a few snaps worth sharing with you. [Click on the thumbnails to open full size pics.]

We had a great day and met loads of awesome people and their pets. If you signed up to our mailing list on the day and this is your first installment – welcome! We’ll announce the results of the draw on our Facebook page on Saturday 11 September and the winner will be notified by email. [The album of photos is posted there too and there are heaps of comments if you want to go and check them out.]

I’m selling off some of my photography gear as I simply never use these pieces. I have a Canon 50D body which I’m selling for $850 +p&p* and a Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM ultra wide angle lens with a lens hood which I’m selling for $750 +p&p*. Both are as new and come with boxes, manuals, etc. Email info@ruthlessphotos.com if you’re interested.

* Or free pickup from Eastern Suburbs of Sydney.

Tatelina - I love going through your blog…favourite photo is the tri coloured Bull Terrier!

Ruth[less] - I know. I wish we could do a pet fair every weekend!!

Janet Palmer - oh look at those gorgeous faces!!

Mel S - Great shots Ruth. Especially love the one of the English BT. Slip and I would’ve come in to see you and strut our RL collar ’round the joint except that I was in Goulburn at a horse hoof trimming workshop.
Smiles…

Boston the Bulldog | Sydney Dog Photographer

You may have seen Boston the Bulldog in the last Ruthless Leather update. When Boston’s owner booked me for a photo session I asked if he could model a collar for us at the same time. He’s such a character I wanted to make the most of my time with him! We started in the park with his collar headshots and afterwards he got to run around and burn off some steam… and roll his freshly cleaned self around in the dirt! Luckily it was dry dirt so it was easy to brush off.

Then we went back to his garden where he was much less distracted by smells and other dogs and I was able to breathe a sigh of relief when he started working the camera!

Who knew such a Bulldog could jump so high?!

He has a pretty funny face when he’s standing still, but isn’t it so much funnier when he’s catching treats! Hehe, sorry Boston, I’m laughing with you, not at you!

As the sun was fading we walked back to the park and I got some lovely warm back-lit shots of Boston.

Thanks for a fun afternoon Stephanie and Boston. I had lots of much needed laughs!!

scruffy dog photography - LOVE these, ruth. beautiful colors and awesome expressions. i always say that although you could never pay me to have a bulldog (i always prefer a real working dog), they are paws-down my favorite dog to shoot.

Julie Austin - You captured some incredible expressions and those jumping shots are awesome! I love that he still has his tail.

Charlotte Reeves - These turned out awesome Ruth! Oh I wanna photograph a Bulldog so bad now!

Wendy - LOVE the treat catching pictures!!! :)

Ruthless Leather Update #11 | strong dog collars

More new stuff, yes indeedy! But first, some feel good news… we’ve signed up as sponsors of Stafford Rescue Victoria for the next three years. They approached us when we were down in Melbourne at the start of June and we were happy to say yes. The last collar we donated to rescue raised over $450 when it was raffled off, so hopefully our donations will help raise some much needed funds for Stafford Rescue Victoria too. Details of their current raffle are here. It was arranged before we got on-board so there’s no prize from us there, but there are lots of other great prizes and it’s a really worthy cause, so check it out.

The regular Lunatic is finally up on the website. Isn’t it pretty?! This one is chestnut and silver with red reflectors. It’s being modeled by the very beautiful Eisha.

I showed you Nova the Stafford’s show set in Update #9. We’ve now added the Supernova to our website. Here it is in brown and aged brass being modeled by Gazza the agility wonder dog!

We’ve also brought out a small dog version of the Lone Ranger collar. Here it is in chestnut and silver being modeled by Ruby the Dachshund. You can see a lot more of her here.

I knew that Enzo and Mila, the Frenchies I photographed last year, were about to emigrate so I had to come up with some designs for them to model before they set off. First up is Enzo wearing The Bubbler in black and brass. It’s currently listed in the narrow collars section, but it’s available in any width.

And Mila’s wearing a 16mm [5/8"] Supernova martingale collar in brown and silver.

Good bye cuties. I’ve now added Hong Kong to the list of places I need to visit so I can see you both again!!

If you’re a “liker” of our Facebook page you might have seen Storm the German Shepherd wearing a brown, brass and amber version of this collar several weeks ago. This is the devilishly handsome Thunder in a burgundy, silver and red Nightowl martingale collar with a matching standard leash.

The low sun made the burgundy look very red. The shots on the left are a better representation of the actual colour.

Next we have the Lone Ranger martingale collar in black and silver, modeled by Hugo the Lab. Poor Hugo got teased terribly when I dropped a note in his owner’s letterbox asking if I could borrow him for a modeling assignment!

And finally, Boston the Bulldog in a wide brown and brass Decoder martingale collar. You’ll be seeing more of this slobbery chops soon as I did a full photoshoot with him.

We were asked to make a Stud Muffin martingale for a large Great Dane. His owner wanted one with no buckle as it didn’t matter if it was loose because her dog doesn’t need a lot of correction. They live in Queensland and I couldn’t find a dog the same size to model it before I posted it, so little Chopper had to step up to the mark again. He’s such a little trooper! Pictured also is a matching standard 6ft lead.

The majority of our martingales are available in narrow, regular and wide widths. If you don’t see the exact design that you want listed on the website just email us. These collars are available without buckles [as shown above], but they cost a bit more as they have a lot more decoration and therefore take more time to make. Non-buckle martingales need to be ordered by email.

If you live in Sydney and you’re looking for something to do on Sat 28 August, come and visit us at The University of Sydney’s Pet Fair on Saturday 28 August. There will also be a Best Pet competition, a Cat Show, NSW Police Dog Unit demonstrations, La Perouse Snake Man, FREE pet health checks, wildlife and exotic pet displays, pet counselling advice, a sausage sizzle, a giant jumping castle, face painting and more. Full details can be found here.
