Free to good home | Sydney Dog Photographer

Free to good home. Four words that spurred me into action this Easter weekend.

My friend Mark was walking his rescue Amstaff, Charlie, and saw a poster advertising a 4yo red and white Amstaff, also called Charlie, free to good home. He SMSd me the details and I contacted the owner to see if she would like some help rehoming her dog. I also told her that advertising her dog FTGH could mean he ends up with an owner that doesn’t value him or even worse, with dog fighters. As Charlie is papered I asked if she’d contacted his breeder. She said she did two years ago but he wasn’t interested in helping her. A dog trainer friend on Facebook saw me post Charlie’s photo and said her friends were looking for an Amstaff, but they have another dog so he’d need to be temp tested, particularly around other dogs. I asked the owner if I arranged temp testing would he pass as I didn’t want to waste everyone’s time if the reason they were rehoming him was because he was dog aggressive. She said that Charlie was good with her 2yo daughter but she wasn’t sure about other dogs because he hadn’t left their back garden FOR OVER TWO YEARS!!! I asked why and she said it was because he was too hard to walk. Here is a video of Charlie being walked around the block by Dave, 5 minutes after meeting him. Charlie is a powerful dog and needs strong leadership, but he’s a very quick learner. It wouldn’t have taken much to mold him into the perfect family pet, but as they didn’t want him any more rehoming him was the best option.

I arranged a temp test with Glenn Cooke from Pet Resorts Australia, so we piled Charlie into a crate [first time ever but he took it all in his stride] and drove him over to Dural. He passed it with flying colours although Glenn did say he’s like a 6mo in a 4yo’s body because he was never taught how to behave. Luckily for him he has a good temperament, so despite his lack of exercise and socialisation, he’s still a great dog. He had a bit of a run around in one of their yards and then he came back to our house for an overnighter. He’s now en-route to his new home in Geelong where he’ll have a buddy to play with, land to run around on and he’ll be an inside dog who’s loved and treated as part of the family.

It was a pretty wet weekend so I didn’t get many photos of him, but here are a few snapshots I wanted to share because he’s such a smiley happy boofhead.

I miss his big goofy head. I don’t miss his tinned food dog farts one bit though!!

Pamila Schwartz - Isn’t he just the most darling boy!! What a smile… Glad this had a happy ending…. P

Tegan - Great work Ruth! Charlie says thank-you, I’m sure.

Rach - Charlie is so lucky! Great job by everyone. He’s gorgeous – especially that last smiley teeth photo :-)

Jenny - That is such a great story. The world needs more people like you guys. The last photo is gorgeous.

Ruth[less] - It was a group effort. Lucky I’m enough of a dog nerd to know all the right people needed to get the job done!

Shauna (Fido & Wino) - Wow- people make me so mad sometimes!

You are a rockstar- good job fixing this! Gorgeous photos! :)

Julie Austin - What a wonderful story! You all who have helped Charlie are the best!

Mace the Dobe puppy | Sydney dog photographer

Mace is one of the MonElite Dobermanns puppies that I photographed a few months ago [see here and here]. He went off to his new home at 8wks but was returned at 14wks through no fault of his own. I had an afternoon free so Monika brought him over my way for some socialisation and a quick photo session. He’s such a great puppy. A credit to his breeder and also his first owner who did some really solid groundwork with him. Here are some of my favourite pics from the day.

Mace has gone to live on an olive farm in the Hunter Valley. I asked if I could go with him, but was politely turned down. Damn!

Update July 2011: Mace died in a tragic accident on the farm. RIP gorgeous boy.

Evan - A true view of a beautiful breed and a beautiful dog that had a tragic end. I hope these pictures stay for all to see around the world.

Jen - Gorgeous – I love the Dumbo running pic too – those floppy ears are so cute!

A Dog's Life Photo - Beautiful photos. Love the action shot. I have a Dobie. They are wonderful dogs.

Simon - ‘Struth Ruth, that’s a *great* set and a seriously handsome dog!

Leanne - I love the dumbo running pic

Tigrabbit, I fear you’ve met your match!

Last week I won a Tigrabbit from Fetching Dogs just by liking their Facebook page. I gave it to Chopper cause I knew he’d get more fun out of it than I would. It will have to be supervised fun though if Tigrabbit wants to make it past Easter, Chopper plays kinda rough!

Fetching Dogs are a support and fund-raising group for Sydney Pet Rescue & Adoption. Proceeds from all products sold go directly back into rescuing and rehoming animals from pounds in NSW. We like that.

Shauna (Fido & Wino) - Great cause and such a wonderful photo!

Call for models > Syd | Commercial dog photographer

I often get approached by companies looking to purchase my images for commercial purposes. Occasionally I’ll arrange sessions where I shoot specifically for this market and waive the session fee.

Yes, yes, my dog was born to model, how do I get involved?
Your dog is:
_ pure or mixed breed
_ any age
_ photogenic and confident in front of the camera
_ human and dog friendly
_ calm and well tempered
_ trained [sit, drop, long stay, recall under distraction]

I’m currently only looking for dog models, but I may open it up to other pets in the future.

If you answered yes [or just nodded in agreement] with all the points above please email models@ruthlessphotos.com and we can discuss specifics.

If you have a doggy superstar but you’re based in South East Queensland, you might like to contact Charlotte Reeves instead.

Charlie and Emmy | Sydney Dog Photographer

I first met Vi at the MDBA Awards dinner in Sydney last year. We’re both members of the same dog forum so we kept in touch and later became Facebook friends. Even though I’d never met Charlie and Emmy before our shoot on Saturday I felt like I already knew them from all her photos and stories about them. I was warned that Emmy could be a bit of a snob so I arrived early to give her time to get used to me. Luckily she warmed to me straight away so off we went to the park for their glamour shots!

The Autumn light was just perfect. It made for some gorgeous bubbly bokeh shots. My favourite!

Charlie has some health issues so he can’t get around too fast, but that’s ok cause Emmy did enough running for two. And boy can this girl run fast!!

My duck toy was to thank for these great head tilts. She only gave me two, so I was lucky to get them both.

Dance Emmy, dance!

Charlie was tired after his big expedition, so he put his head down for a rest on the couch.

Emmy assumed position as watchdog at the front door!

Thanks for a fun shoot Vi, Richie, Charlie and Emmy! I hope you enjoy your gallery.

Ruth[less] - Thanks :)

sarah - these are SO so good! :)

Lisa Prince Fishler - great shots Ruth – my cuteness gauge is full now, thank you!

Britt - What type of camera do you use? they are just amazing pictures.

Linda Kitson - so gorgeous Ruth, you are rocking that light

Jennifer Metzger - jeez, finally, what a tease you are. I love Emmy – probably ‘cuz she is white and I have a black dog. :) I do like spitz breeds though. I love “dance” and Charlie’s sad face at the end. :)

Shell - I love these too oh-so-much!

Awesome photos Ruth!
