Sydney University Pet Fair 2010

On Saturday we took our Ruthless Leather stand to the University of Sydney’s Pet Fair. We were decked out in our new shirts – which took almost an entire day to source and get printed and cost more than one of our collars – and I brought my camera and treat bag as well, just in case! Lots of people turned out and some even came especially to see us. It was a beautiful sunny day and even though it made for difficult shooting conditions I managed to get a few snaps worth sharing with you. [Click on the thumbnails to open full size pics.]

We had a great day and met loads of awesome people and their pets. If you signed up to our mailing list on the day and this is your first installment – welcome! I’m selling off some of my photography gear as I simply never use these pieces. I have a Canon 50D body which I’m selling for $850 +p&p* and a Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM ultra wide angle lens with a lens hood which I’m selling for $750 +p&p*. Sam the homeless Staffy | Sydney Dog Photographer

A couple of months ago I came across a post on a dog forum entitled “White Staffy needs home”. If you know me at all you’ll know that I’m a total sucker for bull breeds, white ones especially! I had a read, asked some questions, gave some advice and then reminded myself that we have enough dogs. A few weeks later I checked back and the owner had not had any luck finding her dog Sam a place with a rescue group. I decided to see if I could help. I contacted Wendy from Golder Retriever Rescue [who used to be my dog trainer and will be the lucky recipient of Chopper if anything should ever happen to myself and Dave!] and I asked her if she could temperament test Sam the Staffy and then list him on Pet Rescue if she thought he was suitable for rehoming. We met at a park and everything went fine and all his paperwork is up-to-date so he was listed that evening. The plan was for me to take some photos that day too, but the heavens opened so I had to wait until today to fit them in.

At the time of writing this blog post Sam’s profile has had 260 views, but no inquiries. He is a lovely dog that will make someone a really excellent pet. He currently lives with another male Staffy and they’ve never fought. However, Sam is a resource guarder so if he was to be rehomed with another dog it would need to be a submissive one. His owner’s living situation has changed. Their son is able to take Choc, but he can only have one dog so Sam needs to find somewhere asap. He loves all people and he’s great with kids. He’s been to the off-lead beach lots of times and he has no problems with other dogs. He is desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and has a clean bill of health. If you know someone that could give Sam a new home, please share this link, time is running out.

UPDATE: Stafford Rescue Victoria have offered to take him. He’ll be traveling to Melbourne next Saturday. His new Pet Rescue profile with their contact details is here. Please note, although he has secured a spot in rescue he still needs a home, so keep spreading the word if you can!

ANOTHER UPDATE: Sam was just featured on the Pedigree Adoption Drive page on Facebook. Fingers crossed the exposure will help find him the perfect home!

Great pics ,what a face ,can’t understand why know one has snapped him up. I am sure Rescue here will be able to find him a forever home and they will keep him until they do.Sad he has to be split from the other Staffy but a good home is more important at this stage.

Ruth[less] - It’s food and toys, but yeah, ours are the same. It’s easily managed, but it’s best to be upfront about these things so the adopter knows.

Last weekend Bindi and Ralf joined the ever increasing list of Fireax Dobermanns that I’ve photographed! Ella makes gorgeous dogs and these two were no exception. I had mentioned to their owner, in an email, that she might like to run them beforehand if she thought they might need to burn off some excess energy. When I arrived and saw how chilled they were I could see why she had laughed off my suggestion. They’re both eight years old, so maybe in a few years time I can look forward to my lot being well behaved when strangers come to the house too. Maybe?!

I started with Bindi purely because she was standing up and seemed ready. She was so easy to work with and the light was gorgeous.

They have a great big swimming pool in their back garden. I love how the blue compliments her chocolate coat.

She loves fishing tennis balls out of it. Don’t think she’ll give it back to you though, it’s HER ball now!

Next up was Ralf. He wasn’t quite as easy to photograph, but he loved my treats so he gave me some cracking smiles to work with. Editing out the drool took a while though!!

It was an absolute pleasure to meet you and your dogs Anna. If you need someone to house sit [preferably in the summer!] you just let me know, ok!;)

Double Aussie Trouble | Sydney Dog Photographer

Ok, trouble might be a bit harsh, but Ripley and Indy the Australian Shepherds were certainly a lively pair! I’ve been waiting about a month to publish this blog post as the photos were a surprise twentieth wedding anniversary present for Cassandra’s husband. She banished him out of the house for the afternoon so we wouldn’t get caught! When I arrived she told me a few ideas for things she’d like in the shoot. Her husband has started making wine, so the barrel featured in a few photos…

…Ripley has a reputation for being a bit of a counter surfer. Her worst crime was when she stole a full block of cheese and swallowed it in one gulp, so we tried to recreate the scene. [She didn't get to eat it all this time though, it's been saved to use as training treats.]

I also did a few one-on-one shots in the garden. Ripley is one of the most photogenic dogs I’ve ever worked with. She was very generous with her cute head tilts, pouts and smiles!

Not that Indy wasn’t great to work with as well. Even though he’s the younger of the two, he was much better at sitting still! They’re both agility dogs, so getting them to jump on things was easy, although a few times they jumped over them instead and then came running back looking so proud of themselves!

Their owner wanted a shot with her in it, but not really in it, so what better way to show their connection than with Ripley and Indy looking at her lovingly. There were no treats involved, these dogs absolutely adore her. Their eyes follow her everywhere!

When we were done at the house we set off into the bush. It was an absolutely gorgeous afternoon and the light was perfect. The plan was to get some of Ripley and Indy together, but there’s a steep edge on one side so they had to be kept on lead.

As we were saying our goodbyes Ripley stood up at the window to make sure she didn’t miss anything!

Happy Anniversary Cassandra! I hope your husband loves his present.

Boston the Bulldog | Sydney Dog Photographer

You may have seen Boston the Bulldog in the last Ruthless Leather update. When Boston’s owner booked me for a photo session I asked if he could model a collar for us at the same time. He’s such a character I wanted to make the most of my time with him! We started in the park with his collar headshots and afterwards he got to run around and burn off some steam… and roll his freshly cleaned self around in the dirt! Luckily it was dry dirt so it was easy to brush off.

Then we went back to his garden where he was much less distracted by smells and other dogs and I was able to breathe a sigh of relief when he started working the camera!

Who knew such a Bulldog could jump so high?!

He has a pretty funny face when he’s standing still, but isn’t it so much funnier when he’s catching treats! Hehe, sorry Boston, I’m laughing with you, not at you!

As the sun was fading we walked back to the park and I got some lovely warm back-lit shots of Boston.

Thanks for a fun afternoon Stephanie and Boston. I had lots of much needed laughs!!

scruffy dog photography - LOVE these, ruth. beautiful colors and awesome expressions. i always say that although you could never pay me to have a bulldog (i always prefer a real working dog), they are paws-down my favorite dog to shoot.

Julie Austin - You captured some incredible expressions and those jumping shots are awesome! I love that he still has his tail.
